Mobile FTP
Mobile FTP is an FTP client for BlackBerry devices.
It has an intuitive interface that allows you to
perform common remote file and folder tasks, including:
- Browse, move, copy, rename or delete files
and folders
- Create and edit text files, such as web pages
- View graphics files
- Edit file or folder permissions
- Transfer large files or folders between remote
servers (FXP)
- View information about files, such as file
size and date created
Using Mobile FTP, you can manage files quickly and
easily from a BlackBerry device. For
example, web developers can use Mobile FTP to connect
to remote web servers and edit
web pages or deploy sites from their BlackBerry
device.
How it works
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and
is a client-server protocol. An FTP client connects
to an FTP server so that you can manage, edit, and
move files on remote servers.
The Mobile FTP application is a FTP client that
you install on your BlackBerry device. You
must install an FTP server on the computer you want
to access.
There is a range of FTP servers available free and
for purchase on the Internet. We
recommend that you evaluate the options relative
to your requirements.
How to connect
There are two ways to establish a connection
to your FTP server from Mobile FTP.
1. Using a BlackBerry Enterprise Server
with Mobile Data Service (MDS) enabled
Most corporate BlackBerry users connect through
a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The MDS on the BES
allows applications to create connections to computers
inside a corporate network. With a BlackBerry Enterprise
Server, you can connect to FTP servers hosted inside
your company's firewall. Typically, you can also
use the BES to connect to FTP servers hosted on
the Internet.
2. Using direct TCP/IP
If you do not have a BlackBerry Enterprise Server,
or if you want to connect to FTP servers located
on the Internet, you can choose to use the direct
TCP/IP stack build into most BlackBerry devices.
Using this option, your FTP server must be publicly
accessible on the Internet and not behind a firewall.
Connections are established directly from your wireless
carrier's network to your server.
Minimum System Requirements
Mobile FTP can be used on any BlackBerry device
with:
- BlackBerry system software v3.6.1 or higher
- a wireless data plan
- a minimum of 16 MB of memory
